東京都世田谷区に構える国立音楽院は、1985年の創設当初から「好きな音楽を一生の仕事に活かす」を理念に６７００人以上の卒業生を輩出してきた総合音楽学校です。もともとは国立市で開講した音楽ホーム教室がはじまりでした。現在では全部で２２の学科・コースを構え、楽器演奏だけでなく、コンピューターミュージック、ヴァイオリン製作など学べる分野は広範にわたります。音楽を愛する生徒たちがあらゆる可能性にチャレンジできる環境作りを続けているなか、近年は音楽と福祉を融合させた音楽療法にも力を入れています。

Kunitachi Music Academy (KMA) is a comprehensive music school located in Setagaya, Tokyo. Since its founding in 1985, KMA has held the philosophy of “Effectively using music for a life long vocation“. Today, the number of KMA graduates exceeds 6700. From its humble beginnings as a music class in Kunitachi City, today the academy has as many as 22 departments/courses, including computer music and violin manufacturing as well as instrument performance. We try to ensure an environment where music-loving students can explore their full potential. Additionally, in recent years KMA has put emphasis on music therapy, combining music and social welfare.

国立音楽院は、今から約50数年前に国立市で開講した音楽ホーム教室が前身です。ただ生徒にピアノを教えるだけではなく、生徒を教える指導員を育てるという多角的な発想から「好きな音楽を一生の仕事に活かす」理念が生まれました。時代による音楽業界の変化に合わせ、いわゆる音楽専門学校でイメージするような演奏分野だけではなく幅広い学科を揃えているのが特徴です。日本で初めて本音楽院が始めたプログラムの代表格が、幼児リトミック指導員養成プログラムです。幼児リトミックとは、音楽やリズム遊びを通じて子供の心を育むプログラムのこと。リトミックとはギリシャ語でリズムを意味し、スイスの作曲家・音楽教育家であるエミール・ジャック＝ダルクローズが提唱した音楽教育の手法です。ある時、生後4ヶ月くらいの赤ちゃんがピアノの音に反応して、母親の膝の上で手足を動かして楽しそうにしている様子を見ました。感性が敏感な乳幼児期に、音楽やリズムに触れることは、その子の個性や能力、心の成長にとって大切な要素になるのではないかと、その時に考えたことが幼児リトミックの始まりです。幼児リトミック教室は全国のカルチャースクールなどで展開していき、同時に幼児リトミック指導員の養成にも力をいれました。これは教育、音楽、発達心理学、音楽療法などさまざまな学問をベースに組んだオリジナルカリキュラムとなっており、こうしたプログラムを作り上げたノウハウは、幼児の分野にとどまらず、他の福祉分野にも取り入れるきっかけとなりました。20年以上前に、音楽療法学科を正式な科目に取り入れたのも、本音楽院が日本で初めてでした。

音楽療法には、音楽を聴くことで心身をコントロールする受動的音楽療法と、歌ったり楽器を奏でたりすることで体を動かす能動的音楽療法があります。能動的音楽療法は、集団で行うことも多く、音楽を通じて他者とコミュニケーションをとることを体験できます。うつ病や認知症などの病気に悩む人や、社会との繋がりが薄くなりがちな高齢者にとって、スムーズに人との関わりを作るきっかけとなります。幼児リトミックのノウハウを、高齢者向けにアレンジすれば「若返りリトミック」として広めることができるのではと考察を始めたのでした。できあがったプログラムは、現在では全国の90箇所以上の福祉施設に導入することができ、卒業生たちが音楽療法士や、幼児リトミック指導員として活躍する受け皿を増やすことにも繋がりました。働く現場は、福祉施設のみならず、カルチャーセンターなど広がりをみせています。
2017年に開校した宮城県加美町の宮城キャンパスでも、本院同様、音楽と福祉による仕事を前提とした学びを提供しています。このキャンパスは、14年に閉校した小学校をリノベーションした施設を活用しており、「音楽と福祉」に地域創生を紐づけた取り組みとなっています。「音楽と福祉」に関わる仕事を、宮城を拠点とした東北地方に波及させていくことで、音楽を仕事にすることを求めて都会へ流出していた若者を、地方に引き寄せる可能性を広げています。さらに宮城キャンパスは、都会では体験することが難しい農業実習を授業に取り入れたり、町民を招いた演奏会の開催や、地元食材を使った給食を生徒が食べたりするなど、周辺の方々との顔を合わせた交流を積極的に行うことで、地域に根ざした音楽教育施設へ成長させていきたいと考えています。

Music therapy is divided into two categories: receptive and active music therapy. The former is intended to control the body and mind by listening to music while the latter requires movement of the body while singing or playing a musical instrument. Active music therapy is often conducted in a group. We experience communication with others through music. It can trigger and foster interpersonal relationships for those suffering from issues like depression and dementia, and the elderly who often have less social interaction. We started discussing ways of adapting expertise garnered from infant eurhythmics to the elderly to popularize it as eurhythmics for rejuvenation. The resulting program has been introduced in over 90 welfare facilities around Japan. It also allowed KMA graduates to work as music therapists or infant eurhythmics educators at such facilities. In addition to welfare facilities, our graduates also work at adult education schools.

Founded in 2017, Kunitachi Music Academy Miyagi Campus also offers curricula for vocational training for music and welfare-based jobs, similar to the main school in Tokyo. The Miyagi school uses the facilities from a renovated elementary school that had closed in 2014. The campus linka music and welfare with regional revitalization activity. Disseminating music and welfare-related information about jobs in Tohoku, with Miyagi as the base, the school is increasing the potential of attracting young people who used to move to large cities to work in the music industry. The school in Miyagi introduces farming into its curricula, in practical training difficult to experience in urban areas. Concerts are also held and local residents invited. Students enjoy school meals based on local foods. Kunitachi Music Academy Miyagi Campus aims to become a community-based music educational facility that proactively interacts with local people.

本音楽院では学院生自身が、自分にとって楽しいと感じ、心から好きだと思えるものを見つけることを大切にしています。熱心に学び、自信を深めた先に、培った力を社会に活かす人生を歩んでもらうことが我々の目的です。長い人生の道のりは、いつも明るく思い通りに進めるとは限りません。一種のスランプもあれば、紆余曲折のなか試行錯誤を重ねなければいけないときもあります。そんなとき、自分の才能や個性を認め、本当にやりたいと思えることを見つめていれば、労を惜しまず努力そのものを楽しめるものです。
本院の生徒は、年齢も、入学までに歩んできた道のり、描く夢も、音楽という共通項をのぞけば十人十色です。75歳で入学を決意した者もいれば、39歳で金融会社を退職しセカンドキャリアとして音楽の道を選ぶ者もいます。不登校の過去や心身障害を抱えながら、社会で活躍する場所を求めて勉強に励んでいる者もいます。ある中学生は小学生時代３年間不登校でしたが、音楽と出会い、片道1時間かけて毎朝10時には学校に到着し、夢に目を輝かせています。彼の姿を見ると、わたしもかつて不登校で音楽に想いを馳せていた頃を思い出したりもします。社会の中でマイノリティと扱われる立場の人であれ、音楽の素晴らしさを通じて社会で活躍できる場所を切り開いていくことが私たちのミッションだと考えています。生徒たちが自分らしい個性を育て、社会に活かし、ユニークな能力と自らの幸せを創り出して欲しいと願っています。

Our aim is to allow students to study, build confidence, and use what they learn for the betterment of society. One cannot always lead the life one expects, often getting into slumps or experience repeated trial and error while undergoing twists and turns of life. At KMA, we believe that one can enjoy hard work by recognizing one’s own talent and personality, and stick to what you really want to do. Although we have a diverse student body, varying in age, personal history, and dreams, the study of music is a single common factor. One student enrolled at the age of 75, and another chose music as their second career after quitting a financial firm at the age of 39. One middle school student is studying hard, dreaming about success in society despite psychological disorders and truancy. From ten o’clock in the morning the child commutes one hour to our academy and dreams of a bright future, having encountered music after three years of truancy from elementary school. He reminds me of what I used to be when I refused to attend school and longed for music. At Kunitachi Music Academy, our mission is to allow minorities to acquire the opportunity to successfully participate in society all the while appreciating the beauty of music. Hopefully, our students will develop their own unique personalities, and effectively use their talents in society, while building their unique abilities and happiness.
